Anonymization and AI: frequently asked questions

Before using AI on work documents, the same questions keep coming up. Here are simple, honest answers to the most frequent ones.

Your questions

Should I stop using ChatGPT at work?
No. AI is a real time-saver. The risk comes from the identifying data you give it. The fix is to anonymize the document before sending, not to give up the tool.
What is the difference between pseudonymization and anonymization?
Pseudonymization is réversible: data is replaced by tokens and a key, kept on your side, lets you return to the real values. Anonymization is irréversible: no way back.
Is ChatGPT Enterprise enough to protect my data?
It helps (no training on your data, configurable rétention), but your data still leaves your perimeter. Anonymizing upstream protects whatever the plan.
Is putting a black box over a name (redaction) enough?
No. In a PDF, the text stays under the box, copyable, and that is what goes into the AI. You must replace the content, not hide it.
Does anonymizing dégrade the AI's answer?
No. The AI works on structure and meaning. Whether the subject is called Jean Dupont or PERSON_1 changes nothing to the quality of the result.
Where does my data go with Safe-Doc?
Processing happens in the European Union, then the data is purged. The mapping key stays on your side and is never sent to a third-party AI.
Does the GDPR forbid using AI?
No, it frames it. Anonymizing before sending makes the usage compliant and controlled, without transferring identifying data.
Can I recover the real values after using the AI?
Yes, with pseudonymization: the key kept locally lets you re-identify the result. With anonymization (irréversible), no.

Safe-Doc anonymizes your documents before the AI and ré-identifies the result locally. See the ChatGPT and GDPR at work guide and how pseudonymization works.

A question about your case? Test anonymization on a document.
